Position Overview
Carleton’s new Integrated Science Center (ISC), which integrates three buildings and houses programming in Archaeology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Geology, Neuroscience, Physics and Astronomy, and Psychology, opened in September 2019, with renovations completed in the fall of 2020. Due to the pandemic, departments and programs housed in the ISC did not begin making full use of the facilities until the fall of 2021. Full use of the ISC brings the new work of managing an integrated complex with a variety of shared facilities and spaces, as well as new opportunities to build community and foster collaboration across STEM fields. To do this work, and to capitalize on these opportunities, we seek to hire a STEM Program Manager.

The STEM Program Manager’s key charge is to build community and foster collaboration across STEM fields and between STEM and other disciplines and communities. The STEM Program Manager is a professional who fosters cross-disciplinary research and teaching collaborations and professional development collaborations (for students, staff, and faculty). The STEM Program Manager also oversees the building operations of the Science Complex.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities
The ideal candidate is a curious, energetic individual with strong people and communication skills who has the ability to foster and maintain connections among the STEM departments and programs at Carleton, as well as between STEM and the broader campus community.

Programming: The program manager will maintain strong connections with STEM faculty, staff, and students, and be tuned in to what’s going on in departments and programs. They will plan, coordinate, and execute programming for students, faculty, and staff, in collaboration with the STEM Director, STEM Board, and STEM departments and programs. They will get to know departments, programs, and personnel within those departments and programs, and use this knowledge to connect faculty and staff to work on collaborative projects. In some cases they will
support collaborative projects as appropriate.

For students: The program manager will execute summer programming and professional development for Student Research Partners. Coordinate community-building activities for current and potential STEM majors and minors, including how first-year students can get involved and succeed in STEM, and identify, curate, and disseminate resources on career exploration and experiential learning to students.

For faculty: The program manager will coordinate and support (through scheduling and resource dissemination) regular conversation opportunities around research and pedagogy, including faculty learning communities centered around a theme.

For staff: The program manager will coordinate and support conversations between staff, and staff / faculty.

Building management: The program manager will coordinate the use and utilization of shared spaces within the Integrated Science Complex. They will work with departments / programs, the Makerspace, and other departments and constituencies on campus on displays within the building to showcase cross-disciplinary work. The candidate will maintain a presence in the building and have a “big picture” view of building issues, particularly those that span multiple departments, serving as the point of contact for departments and programs as well as for people servicing the building, such as Facilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a STEM-related or STEM-adjacent field and/or substantial
    relevant experience fostering connections and managing programming across
    organizational boundaries.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Adaptability in working with a variety of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize complex projects and multiple
  • Ability to make independent judgments and use self-initiative.

Salary and Benefits:
This is an exempt level position. The selected finalist’s salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
