Position OverviewIn the 2020-2021 school year, Carleton rolled out a new land acknowledgement statement reckoning with its relationship to the dispossession of Dakota people. In it, the College committed to “acts of healing and honest storytelling,” promises that require both external and internal initiatives. The Indigenous Communities Liaison, housed in the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE), will strengthen the College’s ability to enact its land acknowledgement commitments, partner with tribal governments and Native organizations, and promote the well-being of Native members of the campus community. Such efforts will include, among others, building better relations with Native nations and improving how Carleton engages Native people and Native-related issues on campus. Where such efforts focus on campus life, they are deeply interconnected with Carleton’s priorities for inclusion, diversity, and equity and its current antiracism initiatives. Carleton College recognizes the importance of Indigenous voices in the development of campus IDE and land acknowledgement plans. The Liaison will work in collaboration with the other CCCE professional staff and the Broom faculty Fellow, along with many other offices, departments, and groups on campus and off. The position is supervised by the Director of the CCCE.
About the CCCE: We seek to create and sustain opportunities for meaningful engagement for the Carleton community to deepen learning, broaden knowledge, and develop reciprocal relationships locally, nationally, and globally. Through thoughtful action, analysis, and reflection, the Center promotes the integration of civic engagement with the College’s deep commitments to student development, teaching, learning, and scholarship.
