Position Overview
In the 2020-2021 school year, Carleton rolled out a new land acknowledgement statement reckoning with its relationship to the dispossession of Dakota people. In it, the College committed to “acts of healing and honest storytelling,” promises that require both external and internal initiatives. The Indigenous Communities Liaison, housed in the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE), will strengthen the College’s ability to enact its land acknowledgement commitments, partner with tribal governments and Native organizations, and promote the well-being of Native members of the campus community. Such efforts will include, among others, building better relations with Native nations and improving how Carleton engages Native people and Native-related issues on campus. Where such efforts focus on campus life, they are deeply interconnected with Carleton’s priorities for inclusion, diversity, and equity and its current antiracism initiatives. Carleton College recognizes the importance of Indigenous voices in the development of campus IDE and land acknowledgement plans.

The Liaison will work in collaboration with the other CCCE professional staff and the Broom faculty Fellow, along with many other offices, departments, and groups on campus and off. The position is supervised by the Director of the CCCE.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Serve as key contact for indigenous community partners engaging with the college. Develop and maintain trusting, reciprocal new relationships and deepen existing relationships. Use significant diplomacy in engaging on- and off-campus partners, including exercising independent judgment and problem solving skills related to relationships with wide-ranging impact.
  • Motivate, influence and gain cooperation of on- and off-campus partners to work collaboratively toward living out the promises in Carleton’s land acknowledgement statement. This work requires independent ethical decision making and discretion with significant implications for outcomes across many college departments and offices as well for our new and forming community partnerships.
  • Provide leadership across the college, such as faculty syllabus consultation, regarding ethical and effective collaboration with indigenous partners.
  • Apply conversance in indigenous cultures, organizations, communities, and legal structures to make operational decisions and influence the decisions of others to advance Carleton’s land acknowledgement goals.
  • Use truth and reconciliation principles and theory to develop new programming engaging a wide swath of the campus community, including multiple disciplines, divisions, and centers.
  • Analyze data, weigh options, and execute complex decisions impacted and informed by faculty, staff, students, and multiple indigenous partners.
  • Create criteria and guidelines to influence how Carleton as an institution and Carleton faculty, staff, and students engage in collaboration with indigenous partners.
  • Work with on and off-campus collaborators to develop and implement new programming for faculty, staff, students, and other partners.
  • Manage program and grant budgets.

Examples of potential tasks:

  • Strengthening campus connections with tribes, including THPOs, tribal research offices, and tribal governments
  • Acting as liaison to the eleven tribes and shaping campus protocols for research partnerships with Native nations, tribal organizations, elders, etc.
  • Conversing with faculty, staff, and students about possible collaborations with Native community partners
  • Preparing resources or programming related to Indigenous histories and contemporary issues (responding to faculty queries, partnering with campus offices on exhibits or events, etc.)
  • Creating a Native alumni network to connect alumni and current students
  • Aiding in the recruitment of Native students with a priority on Dakota and Ojibwe students
  • Otherwise collaborating with campus partners to set a vision for implementation of the land acknowledgement commitments

Required Qualifications:

  • Five to 10 years of relevant experience or a comparable combination of related education and experience.
  • Experience in programming focused on Indigenous communities, Indigenous Studies research, and/or in Native student affairs.
  • Existing knowledge of and good working relationships with many of the eleven Native nations who share geography with Minnesota, including robust knowledge of issues related to tribal sovereignty and history.
  • Existing knowledge of and good working relationships with a range of indigenous-led organizations.
  • Experience developing and sustaining partnerships and/or collaborations between institutions and indigenous communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, including sensitivity to interpersonal dynamics and capacity to build trust.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Skills in program design and implementation, including experience creating goals, developing, and assessing programs in which significant discretion is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with research techniques and ethics
  • Knowledge of Dakota and/or Ojibwe language and culture
  • Familiarity with small liberal arts college environments
  • Experience with community-based research or other community-led partnerships
  • Familiarity with land acknowledgement or truth and reconciliation projects.

Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary for this position is $64,000. The selected finalist’s salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
