Position Overview:

The Lead Locksmith is responsible for the lock database, installation, repair and maintenance of lock sets, door closures, exit hardware, door alarms and other security hardware installed on College property. This person is also responsible for a variety of other locksmith functions. This position requires continuous education to further educate and support this position. This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. 

This is a full time (1.0 FTE) union represented position.

Days/Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

• Maintain computer based key system and inventory and key codes in the Maintenance Office.

• Install, repair and maintain locksets, padlocks, exit hardware, door alarms, and other security hardware and systems.

• Install, repair and maintain door closing devices.

• Key cylinders, cuts keys and controls key blanks.

• Coordinates with the Maintenance Manager to develop master key systems.

• Maintain fire extinguisher inventory; install and replace fire extinguishers as needed.

• Designate work to and assist in training Locksmith.

• Direct the activities of student workers when student workers are assigned.

• Order and specify key system and lock requirements for new buildings.

• Assist Maintenance operations as directed.

• Maintain the clock in the Willis Hall clock tower.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• An associates or bachelor’s degree including database management.

• Experience managing a secure database.

• Knowledge of security systems.

• Basic Knowledge of keying systems.

• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

• Experience using Excel and Word.

• Experience reading construction documents.

• Ability to work independently; self-starter.

• Customer service oriented individual with good interpersonal skills, effective written and verbal communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to multitask while maintaining attention to detail in a fast-paced environment with many interruptions.

• A valid Minnesota driver’s license with a good record (subject to verification).

• Neat and safe work habits.

• Must pass a pre-employment physical (including but not limited to: physical ability to occasionally lift and carry 60 lbs. tools and equipment. Ability to climb step ladders, extension ladders and 120 steps carrying 25 lbs. The ability to stand and walk up to 2 hrs. at a time. Must be able to grasp small tools and parts for installation. Occasionally crawl through a 22” opening and crawl up to 25’. Occasionally use force up to 80 lbs.).

• Ability to pass two separate background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with a master key system.

• Have at least 5-years of locksmith experience.
