Position Overview:

The Program Director for Career Leadership serves as a primary career coach for first- and second-year students, plus responsibilities for encouraging peer-to-peer learning through overseeing, managing, and leading the Student Career Assistant (SCA) program. Develop and administer programming and resources that encourage student career exploration, skill building, and eventual transition into appropriate career cluster(s). Plan and lead career development initiatives and workshops to guide students through early college career processes including major declaration, experiential learning, and summer experience opportunities. Support and encourage students exploring majors and careers from all class years.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

Supervise and manage all aspects of the Student Career Assistant (SCA) program, including:

  • Recruiting, selecting, and hiring student SCA staff each year.

  • Train and prepare SCAs to engage in peer-to-peer learning through resume and cover letter reviews, job search techniques, office management, and knowledge of Career Center programs and resources.

  • Plan and provide regular professional development sessions for SCAs, with a focus on skill-building and learning outcomes.

  • Use innovative and creative methods in marketing the SCAs to the campus community as well as making the SCA role a desirable and sought after position on campus.

  • Collaborate with professional staff to involve SCAs in Career Center programs and initiatives.

  • Represent the Career Center on the Peer Leader Committee and coordinate career-related participation in large campus-wide programming, including New Student Week.


Provide career coaching in individual and group settings, including:

  • Provide advising to first-year and second-year students to clarify and make progress towards achieving academic and career goals.

  • Participate in the design and delivery of career-related workshops, programs, and panels serving the general and targeted student populations.

  • Curate resources, offer programming, and serve as liaison for students in specific affinity groups.

  • Assist students in using Career Center resources and finding information relevant to interests and career goals.

  • Coach students in developing and refining resume writing, interviewing, and job-search skills, as well as articulating the value of a liberal arts education.

  • Promote Career Center curriculum and programming to students, faculty, and staff at the college.

  • Regularly review and update existing Career Center resources and materials, and develop new materials as appropriate.

  • Update Career Center coaching staff on trends and developments in the career field and share updates and resources on career coaching.

Career leadership programs:

  • Lead, recruit, and attend the Gettysburg Leadership Seminar program.

  • Coordinate efforts for student and alumni mentoring opportunities in support of career development of current students. 

Assess and analyze the SCA, Gettysburg, and mentoring programs to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.

Serve on college committees as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (including student affairs, higher education, counseling, or a related discipline).

  • At least two years of experience in career development and/or student advising/coaching.

  • Ability to build strong relationships with student-led organizations and student leaders.

  • Leadership and/or supervisory experience.

  • Strong communication skills in a variety of settings, including one-to-one, small and large group settings.

  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to provide detailed critique of style, organization, grammar, and content of resumes, cover letters, and personal statements.

  • Proven ability to develop, oversee, and facilitate engaging programming and workshops for students.

  • Experience working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.

  • Team-building skills focused on student interaction/relationships.

  • Demonstrated capacity to manage complex projects and programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with career coaching concepts and NACE career competencies.

  • Experience working in a college career center and advising students on career-related topics and professional development.

  • A thorough understanding of the liberal arts and experience working with that student population.
