Position Overview:

The Senior Project Manager will be a member of the CTO’s Leadership Team, dedicated to the SEAMS initiative, and responsible for being the Carleton project manager for the implementation of Workday. The primary focus of this position is to be the bridge between Carleton and our implementation partner. Responsibilities include on-time delivery of the project requirements, as well as campus coordination.

The right candidate for this job will be comfortable communicating up and down the chain, and is skilled at translating technical jargon to campus stakeholders. This person should be a system oriented thinker who can see how various parts of the project affect other departmental priorities and initiatives.


Carleton was founded in 1866 – by educators who understood that human knowledge is the real frontier – and has a long tradition of innovative undergraduate teaching. The college is initiating a project called SEAMS (Seamless Administrative Services) which will modernize Carleton’s enterprise software environment with a move to the Workday platform in multiple phases over the next 3.5 years. The name reflects our goal that by replacing our current administrative software — through a process of evaluation and informed, decisive action — we will create a more seamless administrative experience for everyone in the Carleton College community: students, faculty, and staff alike. The SEAMS project will be steered by its guiding principles, a framework put together via a collaborative series of discussions among campus constituents. These principles will guide each decision along the implementation path

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:


  • Work closely with the CTO, Director of Enterprise Information Systems, SEAMS Steering Group, executive sponsors and the implementation partners to understand Carleton’s institutional mission and the complexity of the SEAMS project environment.
  • Maintain an on-going understanding of faculty, staff and students needs, interests and aspirations that will be supported or challenged during the implementation of new administrative software.
  • Work closely with the implementation partner’s project manager to effectively guide this joint project. Serve as the primary liaison, and relationship manager, with the vendor partner.

Project Management & Leadership:

  • Monitor the project plan, including status towards milestones, to ensure an on-time delivery. Provide regular project updates, tailored to various campus constituencies.
  • Monitor the project budget to ensure an in-budget completion of the four-year initiative, especially appropriate and cautious use of the project contingency.
  • Successfully identify issues as they arise and offer leadership on assembling the appropriate team to discuss and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Provide expertise in the monitoring and management of the various phases of this multi-year project, including scheduling of meetings and management of the issues and decisions log.
  • Cultivate a team-based and mission-driven project environment based on trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team effort.

Communication & Change Management:

  • Serve as the Communications Lead on most communications, including writing, integrating and/or editing information to create emails, blog posts and/or in-person outreach.
  • Serve as the Change Management Lead, in conjunction with a counterpart with the implementation partners and using the implementation partner template & materials.
  • Facilitate meetings and document outcomes, as needed.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the implementation partner.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of experience managing complex projects involving a technology infrastructure.
  • Excellent judgement in complex situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility in working with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Curiosity and technical skills sufficient to guide cross-functional teams toward issue resolution.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including inspiring positivity in the face of project challenges.
  • Experience with enterprise software environment and/or complex software implementations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in an environment committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Workday experience and/or Workday implementation experience.
  • Experience managing relationships with outside consultants in large scale administrative software.
  • Experience managing a project plan created by and co-managed with outside consultants.
  • Fluency with a variety of project management tools and techniques.
  • Experience with change management and managing campus expectations.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
  • Experience in higher education, specifically in the liberal arts setting

This is an exempt level position. The selected finalist’s salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
