Position Overview:

Carleton College is seeking an Associate Director of Institutional Research and Assessment who will have primary responsibility for the assessment functions supported by the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, while sharing in the other responsibilities of the Office. This is a full-time (1.0) FTE, exempt, 12-month, benefit-eligible staff position. Review of applications will begin immediately, with an anticipated start date as soon as possible.

The Carleton College Assessment Environment:

The Carleton Institutional Research and Assessment Office (IRA), which has existed since 1971, is responsible for providing support for institutional research and effectiveness and assessment activities for all areas of the College. IRA works closely with the Dean of the College Office, which has ultimate oversight for academic assessment. Nationally-recognized work in the assessment of student learning has been developed using research based on writing portfolio analysis, primarily to assess writing skills, but also to understand other aspects of student learning and teaching pedagogies. The College maintains a growing suite of assessment activities, including both those supported through external funding and others supported internally. The College regularly participates in a variety of consortial, cooperative, and grant-funded assessment projects. Current assessment interests include analysis of the developmental pathways taken by students from entry to graduation and beyond. This includes advising, career exploration, off-campus study, academic civic engagement, and in-depth study of alumni employment and graduate and professional school outcomes. It is expected that this position will continue this foundational work.

Position Overview:

The Associate Director will be part of an established office with an authorized staff of 3 FTE including the Assistant Vice President, this assessment-focused position, and an Assistant Director with a primary data and reporting focus. The office also typically employs a part-time student worker.

While this position has responsibility within the office for assessment-related functions, it includes the regular involvement in all aspects of institutional research. The Associate Director will report to the Assistant Vice President of Institutional Research and Assessment. The IRA office reports to the Vice President and Chief of Staff, but works very closely with the president, executive leadership, administrative offices, and faculty to support data informed decision making.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:


  • Provides a leadership role in coordinating, developing and facilitating Carleton’s programs of student educational assessment. This will involve close collaboration with other IRA staff, as well as with senior staff, educational program, department and support center directors, faculty members, trustees, and outside organizations to design formative and summative assessment and evaluation strategies and specific projects.
  • Collaborates with team members on multiple concurrent projects to develop quantitative data analysis and assessment plans that optimize processes and data utility.
  • Reporting and presentation of findings about student development, academic and co-curricular activities, and post-Carleton employment and graduate and professional school outcomes both internally and externally.
  • Extract meaning from data using a variety of data tools, analytics and statistical methods such as logistic regression.

Specific Duties:

  • Primary responsibility for coordination, administration and shared analysis of Carleton’s cycle of institutional, national, and ad hoc surveys.
  • Support for Carleton’s ongoing accreditation process with the Higher Learning Commission, including support for the Quality Initiative Project.
  • Support for compiling and updating relevant sections of Carleton’s Management Metrics.
  • Works closely the Dean of the College Office to review and support ongoing department and program assessment activities and periodic reviews.
  • Shares in on-going and ad hoc reporting and support responsibilities of the IRA Office.
  • Represents the Office on various committees or task forces.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

  • Reports to the Assistant Vice President.
  • Shared responsibility for hiring and supervision of student workers.

Required Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate should have three to five years of experience in the area of educational assessment, specifically at the undergraduate level.
  • Master’s degree or higher in educational research, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Ample coursework and/or practical experience in statistics, research design, and methodology, including multiple methods of quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Demonstrated experience in survey design, administration, and analysis.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with management of multiple complex analytic projects simultaneously while maintaining commitments and excellent communication with team members as well as clients.
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Willingness to travel and engage in ongoing education and professional development activities in the evolving areas of assessment and institutional effectiveness.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a related field.
  • Experience with online survey administration software, especially Qualtrics.
  • Skills in business intelligence tools (R, Python).
  • Experience in WorkDay reporting environment.
  • Data integration across multiple platforms (Slate, Advance, WorkDay,,PowerFAIDS) a plus.
