Position Overview:

The Manager of Energy and Sustainability provides leadership to the campus energy program and utility systems, to support and advance Carleton’s efforts to continue its leadership in sustainability in higher education consistent with the College’s Environmental Statement of Principles, and manage related capital projects. The Manager will develop strategies to embed principles of sustainability in the areas of energy management and conservation and the operation of the College, both in its role as a place of learning and research, and as a member of the local community.

The Manager of Energy and Sustainability will play a key role in implementing Carleton’s energy and sustainability goals. This includes:

  • Collaborating with College faculty, administration, students, and staff in the integration of energy management and other sustainable concepts and practices into the operation of Facilities and the College.
  • Identifying desirable sustainability initiatives and assessing their cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and acceptance by the College community.
  • Developing, implementing, and overseeing the College’s energy programs, including procurement and production strategies, energy capital investment strategies, energy conservation, campus energy monitoring, and sustainability objectives within the energy environment.
  • Provide project management and act as the College’s representative on capital projects, campus planning initiatives, and other College projects as assigned.
  • Acting as a representative of the College to communicate with students, faculty, staff, Northfield citizens, city and state regulatory agencies, and with other outside entities, including the media, in the areas of energy goals, sustainability, campus projects, and community relations.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

Energy Management:

  • Manage the campus energy budget including sourcing, production, and purchasing strategies, metering, and energy usage. Oversee and manage energy contracts and agreements with third parties. Develop and review monthly utility consumption reports and billings for accuracy and trends. Identify opportunities for further efficiencies, energy conservation, and system retrofits and re-commissioning to further reduce energy costs and consumption.
  • Coordinate with Xcel Energy on rates, energy audits, energy conservation programs, rebates, and utility system technical issues.
  • Manage renewable energy systems including wind turbine maintenance, contracts and data acquisition.
  • Work closely with the Manager of Maintenance to ensure the efficient and reliable delivery of utilities to campus. Work with maintenance staff to identify facility system upgrades to reduce energy costs, improve building occupant comfort, and support academic programs.
  • Manage the Energy Management Information System (EMIS) including data verification and integration, reporting, dashboards and tracking of energy conservation projects.
  • Support energy-related reporting to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), AASHE STARS, Sightlines annual benchmarking, campus greenhouse gas inventory, and Facilities department reporting.
  • Manage the campus metering systems including maintenance, calibration, replacements, additions and data integration to the campus EMIS.
  • Develop and implement plans and projects to manage and reduce the College’s energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Collaborate with staff, faculty, students, Facilities staff, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies with regard to energy program and conservation project implementation.
  • In partnership with the Director of Facilities, implement sustainability and energy goals, practices, and standards in new construction design and update the College design and construction standards accordingly.


  • Collaborate with others to conceive, develop, and implement strategies for the campus to achieve carbon neutrality in support of the commitment made by the College to the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).
  • Work with other sustainability focused positions and committee structures at the College to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, implement best practices throughout the Facilities department and support other campus departments in their sustainability efforts, such as the Center for Community and Civic Engagement.
  • Enhance the College’s sustainability efforts in cooperation with in-house expertise, peer institution practices, sustainability studies, conference proceedings, and national organization resources, including Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
  • Work with the Manager of Custodial to reduce campus waste streams, especially landfill waste, and promoting zero waste initiatives.
  • Measure, track, and annually update the College’s greenhouse gas inventory.
  • Support the Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) and serve as the chair person.
  • Supervise and work with the student Sustainability Assistants and task them as appropriate with initiatives and projects.
  • Maintain and update the College sustainability Web site.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Sustainability Revolving Fund Committee.
  • Support External Relations in working to increase public awareness of the College’s sustainability initiatives through various media.

Project Management:

  • Facilitate the planning, scope, and budget development of capital projects including, but not limited to, new construction, renovations and retrofits, energy management and conservation, water conservation, and implement these projects with the appropriate offices on campus.
  • Participate in the development, monitoring, and communication of project goals, budgets, and timelines. Provide administration of consultant and construction contracts, change orders, payment applications, and invoices as required. Ensure projects are completed within budget, project scope, and project schedule.
  • Oversee the design, construction, start-up, and commissioning of capital projects as assigned.


  • Communicate energy related and sustainable project planning details to Trustees, executive and other administrative staff, Facilities staff, faculty, students, alumni, and visitors.
  • Provide energy efficiency, sustainability training, and educational services to College constituents as required.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of energy management, facility planning, design and construction principles, contract and budget management, energy and building codes, environmental regulations, and project scheduling and management.
  • Demonstrated experience with sustainability issues and implementation of best practices.
  • Strong organizational skills to simultaneously handle multiple projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Excellent communication skills—oral and written—to document technical and financial information and ability to relate them to the general community.
  • Effective leadership, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of constituencies across the organization.
  • Excellent computer skills with experience using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, along with 5-10 years of proven accomplishment and experience with the planning, development, design, implementation, and management of complex capital projects and experience with facility management and operations.
  • Five years minimum experience with energy management principles and central utility systems serving multiple facilities.
  • Experience with sustainability programs, initiatives, and implementation of sustainable practices along with LEED AP Certification or the ability to obtain such within 18 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Professional Engineering license.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Certified Energy Manager Accreditation.
  • Supervisory and budgeting experience.
