Position Overview:

The Carleton College Gould Library’s Reference & Instruction department seeks an enthusiastic individual to serve as Reference and Instruction Librarian for Arts & Media. The librarian in this position serves as liaison to Art & Art History, Cinema & Media Studies, Theater & Dance, and Music. The ideal candidate will have a BA or higher in the Arts and a Masters in Library Science, or be enrolled in an MLS program from an ALA accredited institution. In addition to this, as an active member of the college’s Copyright Committee, the individual in this position must have a sound understanding of fair use in academia and be able to share this knowledge with faculty and students. This librarian should also have an understanding of the complexity of film licensing/purchasing and streaming film databases.

The individual in this position supports the teaching and learning goals of the college by providing one-on-one instruction at the Reference Desk, in research appointments, and during information literacy instruction sessions. Gould Library emphasizes excellent service to students, faculty, and staff, provides assistance and support for student research, promotes active participation in campus initiatives, and involvement in the campus intellectual life. The Reference and Instruction Librarian for Arts & Media reports to the Head of Reference and Instruction.

Carleton College Library is a member of Bridge, a collaborative consortium with the St. Olaf College Libraries. As a member of the Bridge Consortium, the Reference & Instruction Librarian works collaboratively with peers at the St. Olaf Libraries to provide strategic direction and services for the research needs at Carleton and St. Olaf.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities Continued:

  • Maintain and continuously develop subject expertise in order to provide excellent reference services to faculty, students, and staff.
  • Actively engage and provide outreach to faculty to identify and meet students' information literacy needs.
  • Provide information literacy instruction.
  • Provide individual and group student research consultations.
  • Participate in general reference responsibilities in person, on the phone, through email, video chat, and text chat at the Research/IT help desk. This includes required evening and weekend desk hours.
  • Create and maintain course, subject, and general online research guides.
  • Develop and maintain a reference collection that meets the research needs of the students, regardless of publication format.
  • Working as a liaison between faculty and the library, assist with building the media collections for curricular support by requesting streaming film licensing and physical film purchases for courses.
  • Serve as the library's media copyright liaison.
  • Work collaboratively with Reference and Instruction department colleagues on analysis of student writing portfolios for departmental Information Literacy in Student Writing (ILSW) project.
  • Collaborate with other academic units on campus, including the Academic Support Center and Academic Technology, to provide curricular and research support for faculty and students.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues to mentor and supervise Library Interns and Reference and Instruction interns.
  • As part of the College and Gould Library IDE efforts, develop and maintain relationships with campus partners in co-curricular, residential life, and service-learning programs.
  • Serve on various library, Bridge, and campus committees as needed

Required Qualifications Continued:

  • Teaching experience that can be applied to information literacy instruction.
  • Experience providing reference services.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues and trends in reference services and information literacy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic library experience.
  • Knowledge of copyright issues in media.
  • Familiarity with electronic bibliographic management systems such as Zotero.
  • Experience working in collaboration with faculty to deliver information literacy instruction
