Position Overview:

The Access Services Specialist is a member of the Access Services Department, and has primary responsibility for supervising one of two main service points in the library. This position is responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and motivating approximately 40-45 student workers and providing excellent customer service to professors, staff, students, and the public.

Carleton College is a member of Bridge, a collaborative consortium with the St. Olaf College Libraries. As a member of this consortium, the Access Services Specialist works collaboratively with peers at the St. Olaf Libraries to provide services for Carleton and St. Olaf.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates Access Services student circulation desk and stacks maintenance workers. Coordinates scheduling to ensure complete staffing and smooth functioning of the Access Services desk during all hours the library is open.
  • Creates and maintains training documentation for Access Services student desk and stacks workers.
  • Assists student workers with all aspects of public service. Answers questions about Access Services, explains library policies, and directs patrons to appropriate library staff members or departments.
  • Oversees the work of stacks maintenance student workers including shelving, shifting, and general appearance of library stacks.
  • In collaboration with other Access Services staff, maintains ongoing communication with student workers and Evening Supervisors on library and Access Services policies and procedures.
  • Fully participates in the College and Gould Library Inclusion, Diversity and Equity efforts.
  • Participates in departmental, library, and consortium committees and working groups.
  • Participates in appropriate Bridge working groups, meetings, and functions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree OR 4 years of related experience OR equal years of combination of education and related experience.
  • Evidence of strong supervisory skills and an interest in mentoring and supervising student employees.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation.
  • Technological proficiency and a demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and systems.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Willingness to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and eagerness to learn new skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching or training experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system.
  • Familiarity with best practices in circulation and stacks management
