Carleton College, a highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, seeks to hire a Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach to lead and direct all phases of a competitive NCAA Division III program. This non-tenure track faculty position combines the responsibilities of organizing all areas of the golf program with teaching activity-based physical education classes in our Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation (PEAR) Department. This is a full-time, twelve month position at the assistant professor level in the PEAR Department that reports to the Director of Athletics and Chair of PEAR. 


  • Organize, prepare, and conduct safe and strategic individual and team training sessions and competitive strategies. 
  • Execute appropriate coaching decisions during practice and competition that ensure the welfare of the student athletes representing their program.
  • Understand and support students who are balancing multiple responsibilities as students and athletes in a rigorous academic environment.
  • Develop and incorporate a comprehensive recruiting plan that demonstrates successful results for the recruitment, yield and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes.
  • Oversee, monitor, and balance the budget and all financial operations of the program. 
  • Develop an effective competitive schedule for the program within the budget parameters.
  • Knowledgeable of and be compliant with all Division III and MIAC policies and regulations as well as eligibility requirements. 
  • Hire, supervise, evaluate and support assistant coaches and their professional development as educators. Work with Human Resources and the Athletic Director to comply with necessary hiring processes in a timely fashion.
  • Teach physical education activity-based classes in PEAR that contribute to the development of a holistic wellness environment for our campus community and offer diverse opportunities as required by the College in order for students to fulfill their four PE class graduation requirements.
  • Contribute to the college campus community through engagement events, faculty meetings, campus committees and college service.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Master’s Degree in an appropriate field is required (or at a minimum the degree must be near completion) 
  • College coaching experience is strongly preferred
    • Designing and implementing tactical practice and competition plans 
    • Fostering a positive, organized and enriching experience for the student athletes
    • Ability to effectively teach high-level skills and strategies
  • Demonstrated recruiting experience 
    • Creating an effective, sustainable, and results-oriented recruitment plan
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Must be able to communicate functionally, orally and in writing, with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff, with a commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity.
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
