Position Overview

The position provides primary health care to college students (16-24 year olds) independently, within a collaborative team environment of Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists/Counselors, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Dietitian. The Advanced Practice Provider offers clinical services and preventative care to Carleton students via scheduled individual appointments, telephone triage, and some walk-in care. Works closely with other members of Student Health and Counseling in the ongoing development of integrated physical and mental health services. Reports to the Director of Student Health and Counseling. This is a 10 month (Mid-June to Mid-August) position.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessment including obtaining health/medical history, physical exam, ordering or performing and interpreting laboratory tests, prescribing pharmacologic agents and treatments, and nonpharmacologic therapies. 
  • Assess and treat patients in multiple capacities including acute care, mental health, sexual health and other primary care functions, with an understanding of the needs and challenges associated with a college age population.
  • Provider decision making must include the ability to assess suicidal patients and prescribe psychiatric medication.
  • Consult with and make referrals to other members of the SHAC staff and to off-campus providers as appropriate.
  • Identify best practices for medical care according to established professional standards.
  • Provide care and programs with sensitivity to serving the needs of a diverse student population and creating an inclusive healthcare environment.
  • Document all care provided in an electronic health record to maintain an accurate medical/legal record.
  • Assist in training of new staff. 
  • Collaborate with other campus departments in meeting the health needs of the campus community

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, and provide outreach and training programs.  These programs may be implemented independently, with other members of SHAC, or by peer health educators.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with college students, their parents, the Student Health and Counseling team, Division of Student Life and the Carleton College community and off-campus health professionals.
  • May act as the Laboratory Director for Student Health and Counseling. Maintain certification as a CLIA-waived laboratory testing site. Conduct quality assurance testing and maintain laboratory manual and records. Assure laboratory training and competency of other clinicians in this area.

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Certification: Nurse Practitioners must be licensed as both a registered nurse (RN) and an advanced practice nurse (APRN) through the state of Minnesota.  They must also maintain certification nationally as a nurse practitioner through either ANCC or AANP. Physician Assistants are licensed by the MN board of medicine. They must hold a degree from an accredited PA program and maintain national certification by NCCPA. 
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license.
  • Two or more years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider
  • Comprehensive understanding of Advanced Practice principles, methods, and procedures, and scope of practice in a college health setting.
  • Commitment to maintenance and growth of clinical skills and knowledge through continuing education, self-study, and on-site quality assurance activities.
  • Cross-cultural competency
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and human relations skills
  • Genuine interest in relating to and serving a diverse college population
  • Excellent organizational ability
  • Self-motivated

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in college health environment
  • An interest or experience in working with students who have eating disorders
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
