Position Overview:

Carleton College, a highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, seeks to hire a Head Athletic Performance Coach to lead and direct all phases of a successful NCAA Division III athletic performance program. This is a full-time position in the Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation (PEAR) Department that reports to the Director of Athletics and Chair of PEAR.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Design, prepare, assess, teach and conduct safe and sport-specific training sessions.
  • Work together with part-time assistant coach(es) in all aspects of the program.
  • Organize training schedules for varsity sports in each of the three, 10–week Carleton academic terms and fall preseason that provides equity and balance.
  • Implement rehabilitative exercises for injured student-athletes as prescribed by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or Team Physician.
  • Assist with the hiring, scheduling, and training of student work staff.
  • Plan professional development opportunities with staff and maintain required certifications.
  • Oversee, monitor, and balance all financial operations of the program and plan equipment upgrades in consultation with the Director of Athletics.
  • Know and is compliant with all NCAA Division III, MIAC and Carleton policies and regulations as well as eligibility requirements.
  • Contribute to the college campus community through PEAR department meetings, MIAC strength and conditioning coach meetings, PEAR committees and college engagement events.
  • Understand and support students who are balancing multiple responsibilities as students and athletes in a rigorous academic environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field.
  • Current certification from a nationally recognized certification program per NCAA rules.
  • Coaching at the collegiate level and/or in the private sector with experience in:
    • Designing and implementing safe, effective and high-level training programs for athletes in a variety of sports.
    • Fostering a positive, organized and enriching training environment for the student-athletes.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Must be able to communicate functionally, orally and in writing, with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff, with a commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity.
  • Valid driver’s license (required).

This is an exempt level position. The selected finalist’s salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
