Position Overview:

The director of strategic communications is responsible for telling Carleton's story as a leading liberal arts undergraduate college with authenticity, timeliness and creatively to both external and internal audiences. Working within the Division of Communications, the director advances Carleton's position and brand awareness through digital and print strategies, and leads the team responsible for executing news writing, social media, video production, photograph, print publications, and internal communications.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Managing a team of professionals with authenticity, respect and accountability, and ensuring priorities are clear, deadlines are met, feedback is timely and comprehensive, and work is collaborative, creative and current.
  • Developing and implementing social, editorial, video and public relations strategies to promote Carleton's strategic priorities and keep college constituencies and the broader public engaged in and informed about the college's program about the college's programs and achievements.
  • Building community with Carleton's constituencies by directing the creating of honest, creative, current and compelling social and video content.
  • Leading collaborative editorial planning for the Division of Communications, ensuring editorial plans and calendars for its primary storytelling channel-including Carleton News, the Carleton College Voice, Carleton Today, and the college's official social media channels-are aligned with college priorities and complementary of one another.
  • Writing and copy editing news and feature stories, and creating social media, email and web content as needed.
  • Supporting public relations efforts by assisting with emergency and crisis communications, serving as a college spokesperson when needed, providing counsel to faculty and staff members on issues related to the media, and working with media consultants to place stories with national media.
  • Contributing to a culture of low-risk experimentation by staying up to date with emerging trends and platforms, consuming new media, and advising on the adoption of new tools.
  • Actively engaging with the Carleton community by participating in college activities and events, and staying connected to news about the college, its people, and higher education.
  • Regularly reporting on the performance, readership and effectiveness of Carleton's primary storytelling channels, and recommending and implementing improvements as needed.
  • As a manager, the director is able to not only direct but also execute the work of their employees when needed. Proficiency is social media strategy and news and feature writing is essential to the success of this position, as in experience directing video production and photography.
  • The position manages a departmental budget in accordance with Carleton policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and seven to ten years of relevant leadership experience in communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • Proven excellence in writing, editing, and content development.
  • Experience in digital strategy, social media management, and video and photo direction.
  • Excellent leadership skills, and a proven ability to prioritize, organize and motivate a creative team.
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity, and alternativeness to inclusive marketing and communications practices.
  • Exceptional judgment and ability to problem solve, maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, and collaborate within a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to quickly learn and embrace digital programs and new communications tools.
  • Sense of urgency in response and decision-making.
  • Flexibility and professionalism, ability to manage after hours and weekend assignments as needed.
  • Understanding of complex higher education issues and commitment to the value of a liberal arts education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit setting.
  • Experience managing a team of professional staff.
  • Experience with Adobe Create Suite, WordPress, Canva and email marketing platforms.

This is an exempt level position. The selected finalist’s salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal pay structure, and our overall compensation package.
