The Department of Classics at Carleton College invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin September 1, 2023. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body.

We are seeking an entry-level teacher-scholar who can teach both Latin and Greek at all levels and is passionate about working in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching in both of our four-course language sequences as well as in-translation courses on literature and culture and upper-level language. This position will teach two courses in each of Carleton’s three 10-week terms.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The field of specialization is open, but we are especially interested in someone who will bring expertise that will expand and complement our current offerings and contribute to the department’s teaching of literary analysis both for majors and non-majors. For more information about our Classics program and offerings, please visit the website at https://www.carleton.edu/classics/.

Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000, located in the historic and thriving town of Northfield, Minnesota. We are within commuting distance of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, whose greater metro area has a diverse population of three million people and a rich variety of cultural resources.

To apply, please visit the Carleton College website https://careers.carleton.edu and submit an online application that includes (1) a cover letter that introduces the candidate, their teaching and research interests and strengths, and their goals over the next two years; (2) a c.v.; (3) short descriptions of two proposed in-translation literature or culture courses (150-300 words each); (4) a concise (one-page) statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and how the candidate would contribute to a college community that embraces a diversity of people and perspectives as one of its core values; and (5) contact information for three referees (whom we will contact to solicit letters after an initial round of reviewing applications).

The deadline for receipt of applications is January 27, 2023. Preliminary Zoom interviews will be scheduled in mid-February, with campus visits to follow at the beginning of March. For further inquiries, please contact Prof. Chico Zimmerman at: czimmerm@carleton.edu
